It's Derby week, yet it doesn't really feel like it. It's only the EFL Cup, a few big names are injured and not expected to play, and thanks to the recent run of results from both teams, they don't arrive at this local rivalry game like world beaters, which is what we all expected from them.
Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola don't have their sides playing at their best level yet, and maybe that's good news. It's better to peak in April and May than October, but the two teams are disappointing this month. Manchester City haven't won since Swansea a month ago, and their level of performance has only dropped since then. United are a mess, and their positive results have been more the result of individual talent than collective dominance, and that's gotta be eating Mourinho inside.
We don't know yet if the coaches plan to rotate their sides given this is a League Cup game, and since the Citizens have a massive Champions League game next week, they might as well have to. Guardiola is reportedly looking to start a few youngsters and reserves to give them minutes, and we shouldn't expect a much different approach from Jose either. They're both under pressure, but they're both experienced managers who won't sacrifice their players so early in the season just because it's a Derby in the League Cup, which makes their team selections fascinating, really.
