Lopes has entered the final year of his contract and didn't seem anxious to renew despite the club's reported efforts to keep the 19 year-old attacking midfielder in Manchester. The young Brazilian-born Portuguese International spent last season on loan at Ligue Un club Lille where he excelled, making 27 first team appearances and scoring three goals.
With the stated goal of a more "holistic" approach to building the Blues side having been articulated by the management, it was assumed Lopes was a big part of that plan. However. the player himself having proved his value as a regular as high-level last season probably feels the time is right to get first team football for a club that will be competing in Europe this season.
