Shaky, shaky start from the Blues as Tottenham had several chances to take the early lead but they were unable to find the back of the net. Tottenham’s pressure in the midfield made an already sluggish City look even slower. As the game settled down, City were almost awarded a great opportunity to grab a goal as Lloris came to clear a dangerous ball into the box, but the Frenchman slipped and as Aguero went to pounce on the ball a slight clip of his feet from Fazio ended the chance as a goal kick. Spurs were awarded a corner following a great passage of play from them, another missed free header left City a chance to counter and di they ever. Silva found Aguero making a darting run into the box, t he Argentine drilled his shot into the upper 90 of the near post to give City the lead, 1-0. Spurs ended the first half with a flurry of chances and City’s defense looked more and more vulnerable. Ryan Mason had a great chance to equalize but Hart was able to keep the score at 1-0.
Just like the first half, City came out a bit slow and Spurs had a couple of chances to bring the sides level. After Harry Kane was unable to take advantage of a Demichelis mistake, Aguero almost made the London team pay with his second on the day but his shot went wide of the goal. This half, Kolarov became a huge part of the City attack as the Spurs defense seem to forget about him and leave him with acres of space to operate in. None of his crosses turned into goals, but they were dangerous enough to cause concern for Spurs. After makingentering the match as substitute appearance for Lampard, Nasri left the match with what looks like a groin injury following a threatening move into the Spurs half. Spurs continued to attack as a Soldado chance to bring the sides level again in the 75th minute, but the Spaniard’s shot was blocked by Kolarov, pretty much summing up his experience in the Premier League. With game winding down Spurs kicked it up a notch and splendid saves from Hart left Spurs off the board. Paulinho had two great chances to equalize, one was an offside and Hart saved the other.
In the end, despite a valiant effort from Spurs, City were the victors of this thrilling 1-0 match. Following City’s 3-2 win over Aston Villa I think it was Clichy who said City need to learn how to win ugly and if we’ve learned anything from Chelsea’s Premier League title win this year it was that all wins, no matter ho ugly, are three points in the fight for a league title. This was a huge win against a tough side and, though my heart might have been in my throat the whole match, it’s a big confidence boost for the boys as we head into the final three matches.
