World Cup Day 3: Balotelli Downs England

Christopher Lee

With James Milner an unused substitute, Joe Hart was the only City representative in tonight's game that saw England beaten 2-1 by Italy.

It was a former City player who would have the last word though with Mario Balotelli - who else - getting the winning goal after Daniel Sturridge had earlier cancelled out Claudio Marchisio's opener.

England had chances though and troubled Italy, and will rue missed opportunities, but for the pace and positivity of Raheem Sterling, Italy's superior composure won through.

For Hart, it was a largely quiet evening with him being rarely tested by the Italy attack and had no chance with either of the goals. He looked a touch shaky early on, spilling an early chance and one or two issues with distribution. There was one moment, late on, when he was completely foxed by Andrea Pirlo's long-range free kick.

England now face a crucial game against a Uruguay side who fell to a shock 3-1 defeat at the hands of Costa Rica.
