Week 15: Alternative Tables

Numbers, in sortable format, that tell us things about how good or bad all 20 Premier League teams are.

TSR (Total Shots Ratio) Otherwise known as Corsi in hockey. This looks at a teams share of the total (missed/blocked/on target) shots count.   shots for / total shots (shots f + shots a)

SoTR (shots On Target Ratio) This looks at a teams share of the shots on target count. shots on target f / total shots on target

Fenwick/Unblocked Shots Ratio This looks at a teams share of the shots count with all blocked shots removed. missed shots f + shots on target f / total missed shots + total shots on target

PDO Scoring% (goals/shots on target) + Save % (100-goals against/shots on target against)

Week 15 (Sortable Tables)

All tables set to Close Game State.

TSR

These tables are set to Close and the top is pretty close by that measure. City, Spurs and Chelsea enjoy a small lead.  By Total TSR the top three teams enjoy an even bigger lead over the rest of the league.

Man United are 9th by Close TSR and 10th Total TSR. This isn't a good shots team and now that the Fergie tactical magic/luck has worn off, this is a team that is pretty average at controlling games and dominating the shots count.

Fulham have stopped the bleeding, things are NOT getting worse. New manager, dead cat bounce. Let's see how long it lasts. I hope for Fulham's sake, it does indeed last.

SoTR

Man City's lead at Close is substantial. Man City's lead at Total is bigger still.

If you want to get the most out of these tables then "click" on Total and sort the table in descending order. Doing this you will discover that there are 6 really good shots on target teams in the PL; a small gap to Swansea and Liverpool; then a huge gap to the mid-table teams like Man United.

Note the gap between Liverpool's Close SoTR and their Total SoTR. Liverpool have been padding their numbers (goals, shots & SoT) against weak opposition when at home.

Scoring and save percentages have been regressing at a fair clip in recent weeks. The exceptions: Arsenal's save%, Man City's scoring% and Tottenham's scoring%. These three teams should see a shift in the coming weeks

Open Play/Set Piece Shots +/-

Tottenham are great by the Open Play numbers. Man City are great by the Set Piece numbers. Newcastle are weird. Fulham get butchered in both open play and from set pieces.

Welp, Man United's shots +/- from open play!
