Weiss moves on

Confirmation was posted up yesterday to bring a somewhat muted end to Weiss's City career; one that was full of promise but platauad since making his debut back in 2009.

The Slovakian had a loan spell at Bolton which was hoped would be a ‘finishing school' for him to come back to really challenge for a regular place but the move never saw him kick on and a disappointing 2010 World Cup followed.

The past two seasons have seen him loaned to first Rangers (his comments about the Glasgow club hardly endearing him to City fans) and then Espanyol last season. These, however, were moves that were more to clear squad space than with the intention of Weiss kickstarting his career at City.

Much like with Shaun Wright-Phillips, there too was a sense that Weiss's style didn't wholly fit with the system adopted by Roberto Mancini, meaning he would face an added difficulty in trying to force his way into the side.

It would be easy to blame the influx of money and big name players for stalling Weiss's progress but his time at the club was not without opportunity and it is evident that his progression and development has stalled. There is of course a valid argument that if Weiss had progressed through the Academy at the same time as the likes of Micah Richards, Stephen Ireland, Nedum Onouha and Michael Johnson then a greater opportunity would have presented itself to him.

But, and like for the aforementioned quartet (Richards aside of course), time would always likely have caught up with Weiss's City career regardless.
