David Silva made the key pass that led to Cesc Fabregas cancelling out Antonio di Natale's goal as Spain and Italy played out a 1-1 draw to open up Group C of the 2012 European Championships.
Silva featured heavily during the first half, playing in an advanced role on the right hand side with Spain opting to start without a recognised striker - Fabregas playing the furthest forward - and was key in being involved in four first half scoring chances before being withdrawn shortly after providing the assist that help the Spaniards earn a point.
For Italy, Mario Balotelli started alongside Antonio Cassano but it was a frustrating afternoon as he failed to really make a mark, completing just 2/4 passes in the final third, hitting a shot high over the bar and stalling when clean through on Iker Casillas. Balotelli was eventually withdrawn for di Natale and may see his placed under threat.
Italy face group leaders Croatia in their second game whilst Spain take on Ireland with both games taking place on Thursday.
