City v United: Mancini's press conference

A look at the Italian's Friday press conference ahead of the derby.

Alex Livesey

  • Mancini was not happy at failing to qualify for the Europa League, although he conceded it may provide City with an advantage in February and March when fixtures begin to pile up. He felt that the crucial games were the two games against Ajax that were critical to their hopes.
  • He doesn't feel it creates more pressure though or means that he now has to deliver a title. He repeated his claim that United are favourites, feels they are a strong team and that they strengthened well during the summer. He suggested United are in a better place at the moment but believes there is no fear of United as there may have been in previous seasons.
  • In terms of injuries, Alexsandar Kolarov is ruled out, Gael Clichy is a possibility and he is hopeful that David Silva will be passed fit to play. He concedes that it is difficult to win two titles in a row and that City are experiencing difficulties at the moment. City have resolved some of the defensive issues but he now wants more from the strikers.
  • There are no regrets over missing out on Robin Van Persie, lthough he did allude (once again) to the fact certain targets were missed because of Brian Marwood, stating that there was a 'CEO change' and that '...if you are not strong enough you can have problems.'
  • He suggested there is not the same quality as there as over the first ten-fifteen games, but after all the problems they've had it is a good position to be in by only being three points behind.
  • And check out Mancini's response to being informed of Sir Alex Ferguson's comments over the number of penalties City have been awarded.
