Liverpool player ratings

Hart - cuts a far more imposing figure than he did before his year away. Controlled the back line well and made a superb flurry of saves to deny Liverpool at 2-0. 7.5

Richards - a surprise recall to the line-up and atoned for the performance at White Hart Lane. Not required in attack too often but a job well done. 7

Kolo Toure - made one foray into the opposition territory but was largely confined to defensive duties but looked as assured as we have seen him. 7.5

Kompany - appears to grow in stature with each game. Strong, composed and committed in the tackle he rarely allowed Torres an opportunity. 8

Lescott - not a natural left back by any stretch but when he stuck to the basics performed well. Should see plenty of playing time with injuries in that area. 7

de Jong -such a vital shield in front of the defence and allows for Barry and (Yaya) Toure to get forward. Made a couple of memorable tackles on Torres. 7.5

Barry -far more effective and involved when you see him live as opposed to TV. Capped a good night with a goal and won't be easily moved from the side. 7.5

Yaya Toure - didn't appear to break stride but turned in a very accomplished performance. Played in a slightly advanced role but makes the game appear simple and set to play a big part this season. 8

Johnson - perhaps his best performance in a City shirt. Direct, skilful and full of running, he tormented Agger in particular. Went close with a fizzing shot and won the penalty late on. 8

Milner - an impressive debut. Showed all of the versatility, drive, dynamism and energy that made Roberto Mancini so high on him. 8

Tevez - not always flourished as a lone front man but was excellent yesterday, tireless and linking well with Johnson in particular. Got his rewards with two goals and reports of a lack of motivation appear unfounded. 8

Subs -

Zabaleta - the utility man and Mancini favourite got a late taste of the action. 7

Jo - introduced rather than Adebayor, but can't have been anything more than a ‘shop window' exercise. 7
