In a surprise - but well deserved - result yesterday, Slovakia hauled themselves from the foot of the table after taking just one point from their opening two games to qualify for the second round stage with a 3-2 victory over reigning champions Italy, a result that knocked the Azzurri out of the competition.
Although Italy made a late fist of things, Slovakia were well worth the victory and with Paraguay drawing against New Zealand they progressed through in second place from Group F. They will now play the Netherlands in the last sixteen on Monday afternoon.
Despite playing in the first two games, Vladimir Weiss was left out of the line-up for the victory and given the impressive showing it remains to be seen whether he will come back into the side for the game against Netherlands.
