FA CUP VICTORY AND WEBLEY DATE SECURED.

A really good win and performance from most City players as they conquer Newcastle United and advance in the FA Cup. Bernardo Silva is hugely in good form and we move on to the next round vs Chelsea at Wembley.

On to the reaction-

On Bernardo

“Everybody loves him, and we want him. He’s really important for us.

“Kevin will be back soon, but when you see the schedule after the international break, we have Arsenal, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Madrid.

“Three days, three days, three days. Will be really tough, and we have to have everyone.

“I’ve said many times how important personally and in terms of football Bernardo is”

“We push him wider but in central positions he has the ability to dribble and run.

“After he has to have the quality to see the pass like Kevin, Gundogan, Riyad and Phil.

“His next step is to make the pass to Erling in the last moment. He played really good, he helped us to keep the ball and dribble.”

On Grealish

“He has 10 days to train, we have a plan for him and he will be ready,” the City boss said.

“I said to the team every three days we have a game with finals in the Premier League, Champions League and everyone is going to help us. No player can sustain every three days.

“After Arsenal, [Aston] Villa then [Crystal Palace at] Selhurst Park then Madrid.

“Everyone will be needed to handle it. As much as we get players fit we have more chance of success.

“We take it game-by-game. I don’t think much longer than that.”

On team’s mentality

“To expect [to be] coming back from the last international break with two months left and be in contention for all the titles means a lot,”

“People talk about the Premier League and Champions League but when you win four Carabao Cups in a row and get to six FA Cup semi-finals in a row, this team and this club has something special.

“We want to win all of them but sometimes it is not possible because of the quality of the opponents and the schedule we have.

“I remember playing away in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and then at Wembley is so difficult.

“To arrive in your best condition in those situations is difficult but we were there.

“Always you can have a bad night but when you have six times in a row [FA Cup semi-finals], you have less bad nights.

“This is the consistency that proves people who doubt the team wrong.”

Welcome to your quick recap.

Manchester City are winners at home as the win makes us advance in the cup. A really good win and seeing Foden in the middle is awesome for the future fixtures.

A match that had a similar feel to most City matches, yet resulted in some great play for the team as the intensity was there early. It was a bit disjointed at points especially that second half, but chances were created either way.

One where City was in control with possession and chances created. They played an ok match and are in right in the thick of multi faceted title charge.

City had so many players who played well and that includes some lineup choices that were not popular with their fans.

Two players of note who did play well and were lively were Ruben Dias and Phil Foden who showed up well.

The story of the night is that City get a win in the cup and will face Chelsea.

A solid result and we move.

Blues Keep Pressure on Chelsea at Top of WSL

Manchester City Women responded to Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Arsenal in style by thumping Brighton 4-0 to keep their hopes of winning the WSL firmly alive. Lauren Hemp and Mary Fowler scored in the first half, while Bunny Shaw and Laura Coombs added goals in the second half to give the blues a commanding lead before former blue Lee Geum-min scored a consolation goal in the last minutes of the match.

City went into the match on the back of two successive cup defeats to Chelsea and Spurs, and with Chelsea winning on Friday to open up a three-point lead, City needed to produce an exemplary performance and ensure they returned north with three points.

And that’s exactly what they did as the blues dominated the match from the start, but had to be patient and find a way through the stubborn Brighton defence. And once they did, there was no stopping them.

Jess Park, who has been so influential since gaining a place in the starting line-up, released Hemp on the left who fired past Sophie Baggaley to put City in front. The keeper should really have done better but was unable to prevent the shot from squeezing past her.

City continued to go forward but were well aware of the threat Brighton posed. The Seagulls hit City on the break to score the only goal when the two teams met in November, and manager Gareth Taylor kept reminding his team of that from the sidelines.

On a few occasions, Brighton were able to get forward and pose some problems, but it was nothing that the City defence couldn’t handle as they held onto their lead. And that doubled five minutes from the break as Fowler converted Hemp’s cross to put City in complete control. The winger did excellent work on the left and her cross into the middle left Baggaley in two minds and Fowler took advantage to sidefoot home.

After the break it was more of the same from the blues. Knowing that goal difference could be crucial in the title race, they poured forward in search of more goals. Hemp’s vicious shot smacked against the post, before Shaw headed home her 16th WSL goal of the season as she converted a superb cross by the excellent Yui Hasegawa. And when Coombs swept home the fourth from Fowler’s cross into the box, City were once again level on points and only one goal behind the leaders.

Two more goals from the blues would have seen City go above Chelsea, however, only one more was scored and, typically, it went to Brighton. Lee clipped in Sarri’s cross in the 90th minute to ruin City’s clean sheet and send the number of goals conceded into double figures.

It was a bitter blow for City, right at the end of the match but, with six games remaining, the blues have everything to play for.

Blues Take on Seagulls In Vital WSL Match

Manchester City Women travel to Brighton for a crucial WSL clash that can see the blues move level on points once again with Chelsea at the top of the table. Emma Hayes’s side went three points clear of the blues with victory over Arsenal last night and City will need the three points to keep the title race open.

The blues suffered a shock defeat to Brighton when the two teams met in November, the first time they have lost to the Seagulls and will no doubt be looking for a modicum of revenge when they meet on Sunday.

Form

City go into the match on the back of two straight cup defeats. They lost the League Cup clash with Chelsea at the Joie Stadium, while in the FA Cup, the blues were seconds from victory until Khiara Keating’s error allowed Beth England to tap home an equaliser.

In the league, City have won their last nine matches, ironically, all their WSL games since that 1-0 defeat in November.

Brighton face the blues on the back of a 4-0 home thrashing by Manchester United in the FA Cup, but their last league outing ended in a 7-3 victory at Bristol City. That was their first WSL win since January, when they beat the same opposition at home. In between, they lost at home to Chelsea and Liverpool, in addition to being beaten 2-0 at United.

Team News

Brighton defender Poppy Pattinson serves the last of her three-match ban against the blues and striker Taylor Smith has been recalled to her parent club, Gotham FC.

City have confirmed Bunny Shaw will be available and Chloe Kelly may make a return to the side after dropping to the subs bench last weekend.

Prediction

The result against Brighton in November was a shock but I don’t think City will repeat that on Sunday. With the league at stake, I would expect a professional performance and a City win.

How Our Writers See Today’s Match

Manchester City take on Newcastle United as they look to book another FA Cup semi-final spot. City have appeared in the semi-final stage for the last five seasons, reaching the final and winning the trophy twice. They face a Newcastle side that started the season brightly and with a lot of promise, but ultimately fell away in the second half of the season.

The match will be the tenth meeting between the two sides in the FA Cup and the fourth time they have clashed this season. City have won two of those three meetings, with the Toon knocking the blues out of the League Cup in September.

As usual, our team are on hand to give us their feelings on how the match will go, and also to win points to try and catch Saul in our own league table.

Saul

Tricky game vs a solid opponent. Give me a narrow win with a full team.

City 2-1 Newcastle

Thomas

After getting past Blackburn Rovers on penalties, the Magpies head to the Etihad to face the Cup holders. City have gone unbeaten in their last 37 home matches, and I don’t think they slip up here. No De Bruyne this time out, but that just means it’s Phil F’ing Foden’s show. Give me the Manc Blues to advance to the Semis.

City 3-1 Newcastle

Craig

Newcastle are depleted but they will surely see this cup as their top priority this season. I expect a spirited performance from them but I don’t see it being enough in the end. City march on to the semis.

City 2-1 Newcastle United

Dillon

No Ederson or KDB shouldn’t make too much of a difference in this one, especially considering Ederson wouldn’t have played anyway. Newcastle are in a better spot than they were in January when we faced them, but are still going to be without several key members of the squad.

The game being at the Etihad is also a major bonus. Feel like we’ve been to St. James’ Park a dozen times the past two years.

Manchester City 3-1 Newcastle

Pete

Potentially a tricky match as the FA Cup is probably Newcastle’s only chance of making the season a success, although they could potentially sneak into Europe with a good run of form. I think City will have too much for the Toon though and, although Newcastle will probably score, City will get more.

City 4-2 Newcastle

Last Time Out

Craig correctly predicted the result, but not the score and was the only one of us to claim any points. The rest of us were crazy enough to think City would win at Liverpool. Saul was left begging for a last-minute City winner, like we all were, but that would have won him three points. Let’s see how we get on this week. Here’s the table:

A big cup match.

A tough FA Cup clash as the Cityzens face Newcastle United. A good match for us and one where Pep expressed confidence in his side.

“He’s proven himself since he arrived with incredible quality performances,” said Pep.

“We’re delighted with all three keepers at the moment but when he’s had to play he’s performed unbelievable.

“Eddie is getting better. Hopefully he’ll be ready after the international break.”

“Kevin’s not ready. He already played in Anfield with some problems,” the City boss said.

“But he’s getting better. He’s not ready for tomorrow but we spoke with the manager from Belgium, Domenico Tedesco, and he decide I’m grateful because he didn’t feel good and he could recover for the rest of the season.

“He played well [at Anfield]. All the players have problems but the day after he didn’t feel good, but it’s better to take care.

“Eddie is getting better, hopefully he’ll be ready after the international break.

“Tomorrow for sure [he is out]. He’ll have two weeks off then, he’ll recover, we’ll see how he feels. Hopefully as soon as possible.

“Yeah [Jack is getting better.

“He’ll be selected in the group [for this weekend].”

“We have an incredible chance at home with our people. We need in home games the support of our fans like we had against United, I don’t remember that environment for a long time.

“Tomorrow isn’t an exception. We need it to reach the semi-final at Wembley again.”

Let’s hope for a clean match, win and no injuries.

A great tie and some angst.

A clash of titans as Real Madrid face Manchester City.

The first leg will be played at Bernabeu Stadium on either 9 or 10 April with the return match at the Etihad Stadium on either 16 or 17 April.

And should Pep Guardiola’s side progress past Madrid, we will face either Arsenal or Bayern Munich in the semi-finals which take place in May.

In European Champions League competition overall, our record against Madrid is played ten, won four, drawn three and lost three.

A really exciting set of matches and we heard from Pep on the draw.

“It’s a bit like a tradition, three years in a row playing the king of the competition who have won 14 Champions Leagues,”

“It is what it is, hopefully we can have a good moment.

“[There are] still a few weeks before the first game in Madrid. We’ll see.

“The draw you cannot control.

“Normally when the people say the draw is easy, you undermine the other opponents.

“It’s not necessary to say what Real Madrid is in this competition, the second leg is at home but two seasons ago it was away, so it is what it is.

“We have to do two good games there and here to go through.”

“I would say for us it’s a little bit new, for Real Madrid it’s not special to play the quarter-final of the UEFA Champions League,”

Let’s hope for progression.
