World Cup 2010 - de Jong starts with a win

Nigel de Jong played all but five minutes or so of Holland's opening encounter with Denmark yesterday, which they comfortably won 2-0 to cement their status of Group favourites.

Having only seen the highlights personally, TLDORC has a more in depth summary of the game here, but it didn't appear as though de Jong's qualities were overly required (although he did have a hand in creating the opening goal) but his performance was marked by a two-footed tackle that he was luckily to escape only a yellow card from - particularly given that a red card has been (quite correctly) the punishment for similar tackles during the tournament so far.

It wasn't a tackle that is in any way alien to de Jong's game and thinking back it is surprising that his disciplinary record over the course of the season was as good as it was.

This of course may be as a result that de Jong's indiscretions are largely viewed as reckless as opposed to malicious, but if the FIFA edict that they are to be viewed in the same light filters down to the domestic leagues then de Jong may find himself sitting out more time next season.
